A Very Basic Diet Philosophy

If I had to break it down into a single sentence:

“You know what real food is, so stop eating crap.”

You know what real food is: things that grew in the earth, on a tree, came out of the ocean, ran in pastures, or flew in the air. Meat, nuts, fish, eggs, vegetables, fruits, all great examples of REAL food.

On top of that, you know what crappy food is: food that comes in a box, bag, or wrapper, through a drive-thru window, or from a vending machine. Get it? Of course you do. If it has an ingredient list of three or more items, it’s probably not good for you. If it went through a dozen steps to get to the point where you’re about to eat it, it’s probably not good for you. What is it, if it’s not food? It is likely a way for a manufacturer to make money in a competitive area, but that does not make it real food.

Remember, “you can’t outrun your fork“. When trying to lose weight, feel healthy, and get in shape, 80% of your success or failure will come from how well you eat.

Maybe your ability to actually DO IT has eluded you for some reason – you got sick, went on vacation, got bored, or just decided that you couldn’t live without certain crap food…but…

Small changes CAN produce big results. You need to determine for yourself how likely you are to succeed depending on how many changes at once you can deal with: Some people can adjust everything they eat overnight and have no adverse effects. Other people feel that they just can’t give up certain foods and the second they go more than a few days without it they become VERY, VERY cranky.

That choice is yours. You need to determine:

How much do you hate change?
How much weight you think you want to lose?
How soon do you need to lose that weight? (wedding? vacation?)
How likely are you to stick with your changes?

Like playing Angry Birds or any other game, you need to determine what level of difficulty you’re up for. Sure, playing on level 99 gives you less room for error, but it also produces more impressive results. Or maybe you’re happym with playing on easy, because you can have more fun with it.

Decide what method works best for you based on how radical of a change you’re chasing. Just don’t overdo it – small permanent successes will beat out ambitious failures 100 times out of 100.

Committing to personal change

If you are just eating better because somebody told you to or because you think you should (but don’t really have much of a reason)…every day that you keep yourself away from favorite foods will seem like massive torture – and you will likely fail.

Instead, look at the changes you’re making to your diet as small steps on the path to a balanced, sustainable life. You’re staying off junk food because you want to be overall happier (!), and/or because you want to set a good example for your children.

As self-help guru Tony Robbins says, “nothing tastes as good as looking good feels.”

It’s time to give up that instant gratification you get from eating a donut, a bag of chips, or pizza, pizza, pizza.

You are not a slave to your tongue…it’s just one part of the glorious complex machine that is you.

You DO have a choice – stop letting the food companies, who have all designed these crappy foods for maximum addiction value, hold you hostage.

You have loftier goals, you are better than that, you CAN do it. Write that down now: I CAN do it. I will make ONE STEP in real life today, I will move my hands and feet and throw out some junk food from my pantry, or scan my fridge and make a list of the healthy veggies I will shop for today. I will type my favorite veggie into Google and follow the bliss of that. And tomorrow I will take TWO steps. Yes.
