10 Surprising Weight Loss Strategies You’ve Never Heard About

If you have already tried all the basic weight loss strategies, such as doing more exercise or going on a diet, you may be wondering if there may be other, less conventional methods that can contribute to losing weight.   • Apple cider vinegar 
  • A tablespoon of apple cider vinegar every morning may contribute to weight loss. Research shows that this acetic acid has the power to make you feel fuller than you may be. Namely, a study examining the relationship between apple cider vinegar and weight loss discovered that participants ate 200-300 fewer calories throughout the whole day (Gunners, 2021). Additionally, you can use apple cider vinegar for weight loss as it lowers blood sugar and insulin levels (Gunners, 2021).

  • Green tea 
  • You may drink green tea to get your daily dose of caffeine or because you like the taste. Still, indeed you may not have realized that there is a relationship between green tea and weight loss: this drink contains catechins— potent antioxidants that work hand in hand with caffeine to burn your extra fat (Gunners, 2018). 

  • Use smaller plates

  • This weird trick works because looking at oneself while consuming unhealthy food can be unattractive, making unhealthy food less desirable and even less tasty! The awareness of what you’re putting into your body can be slimming as it subconsciously encourages healthier food choices (Lucas, 2019). To illustrate, a study with 185 participants found that the presence of a mirror made a chocolate cake less tasteful, while the taste of a fruit salad did not change (Lucas, 2019). 

  • But first, soup!
  • According to an experiment conducted by Penn State University, eating soup before your main course may cut the meals’ calorie count by 20%  (Lucas, 2019). Not only are broth-based soups good for you, but they can fill you up with nutrients and decrease your hunger before the main course. 

  • Make your home cooler than usual
  • Living in a home with a cooler temperature (i.e., 61 degrees Fahrenheit) can potentially enhance the “brown fat” store in your body. Brown fat consists of “good” fats that lean people have more of than the other kinds of fat that form as a result of high caloric intake (Doheny, 2011).

  • Don’t keep treats in the house— go out!
  • Make it more of a hassle to get to those tasty, unhealthy foods by keeping them out of your cupboards. When one has to work more for those sweets and snacks that rack up your caloric intake, their consumption decreases over time, which aids the prospect of weight reduction (Doheny, 2011). 

  • Make things a little spicier
  • Spicy foods— especially chilli peppers— contain an aromatic compound called capsaicin; this element of spicy food can not only boost your metabolism but can also reduce your appetite, both essential aspects of losing weight (Gunners, 2018). For example, in an experiment examining the effect of spicy food on weight loss, participants consumed only half a teaspoon of cayenne pepper, and they consumed 60 fewer calories on their next meal (Birnbaum, 2011).
